Top Spots

The south west has some great fishing spots that are easily accessible. Here are some to get you started

Koombana Bay - Bunbury

Koombana Bay is a really safe spot and is very fishable in most conditions. It is quite a busy spot with passing container ships, dolphins, jetskis and beach volleyball. Most of the usual suspects can be caught such as tailor, herring and sand whiting. A few King George Whiting are caught however many are undersized.

The Cut - Bunbury

The Cut is an artificial channel which is the mouth of the Leschenault Estuary. During the change of the tide, the water here can be on the move. This water movement stirs up the bottom and forces out bait fish towards waiting predators. The Cut has a concrete platform which has been designed so that disabled fisher can access the site and drop a line. Good spot for tailor and herring.

Back Beach Bunbury

This stretch of beach offers some great opportunites during summer and for salmon during autumn. The area has a splattering of reefs amongst sandy and seagrass bottoms. If the afternoon sea breeze is strong it will be hard to cast and fish with light gear. You can try here for Tailor, Herring, Sand Whiting, Yellowfin Whiting, Silver Bream, Mulloway and Flathead.

Busselton Jetty

Here you can fish in just about all conditions, apart from when there are strong winds from the north. You can catch a variety of species, especially blue swimmer crabs, herring, squid, garfish and occasionally the odd mulloway, samsonfish and bonito. Entry is free for kids but adults will need to pay, but remember the money is used to pay for jetty repairs. While you are there why no check out the Underwater Observatory.

Geographe Bay – Busselton

There is plenty of room to spread out along Geographe Bay for a fish. During winter, heaps of seagrass pile up on the beach is what’s called wracks. This makes things very difficult to fish from shore until it clears in Spring. If you are able to go out on a boat, there are plenty of crabs and squid around during winter. Always watch out for northerly winds as they make the bay very choppy. The temperature of the bay will vary from season to season and therefore the fish species too. Here you can catch Herring, sand whiting, yellowfin whiting, skippy, tailor, silver bream, flounder, and salmon.
